Amritsar is a major historical and cultural city in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab, located just 28 kilometers from the border with Pakistan. Founded in the 16th century by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru, the city derives its name from the Amrit Sarovar, a sacred pool surrounding its most famous landmark. Amritsar is the spiritual heart of Sikhism, housing the magnificent Harmandir Sahib, commonly known as the Golden Temple.
